Everyone wants to have a nice, natural smile that will give them confidence and allow them to eat without pain. However, if you suffer from root canal infections then this can leave you with severe pain and damage to your tooth. The root canal is the hollow section within the tooth that contains the pulp and the nerves. Infected material in this area of the tooth can lead to a compromised nerve.
If you suffer from any type of tooth pain, it is a good idea to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. We have many appointments available throughout the day that can give you the help that you need. These appointments can be scheduled to suit your commitments and daily life, so you never have to miss an appointment.
Root canals can become infected for a variety of reasons. However, if there is diseased pulp tissue then this needs to be removed through root canal therapy.
Firstly, you will need to book a consultation appointment so that the dentist can check the tooth and see what treatment is needed. You can be assured that our professional and conservative dentists will only perform root canals if they are necessary.
Our gentle dentists will be able to give you all the information and advice that you need. They will usually perform an X-ray on the affected tooth to determine if there is any damage or infected tooth pulp.
Once the X-rays and the examination are complete, you will be given time to ask any questions about your treatment. This includes asking about any allergies or conditions that may affect treatment. We also have latex or non-latex material available for anyone that has an allergy specific to latex.
Of course, when people hear the words ‘root canal’, they instantly think that the procedure will be painful and unpleasant. However, modern canal treatments include better pain medication and advanced root canal files that are able to make the whole procedure a better experience.
If a root canal procedure is necessary, you can be sure it has been carefully considered by our team. If there is a crack or cavity in the tooth, this can infect the pulp leading to pain and damage. This infection will then weaken the ligaments that surround the tooth, making the tooth weak and become loose.
Obviously, the best way to go is not to have a root canal at all. However, in the event of it occurring, we can offer a wide range of dental treatments and preventative options to get you smiling brightly once more.
There are also many things that you can do to improve your dental health and help to prevent a root canal procedure in the first place.
The sooner someone sees the dentist, the better the chances of preventing tooth loss or fillings. Children should be seen by a dentist as early as required so that they get used to the experience and the environment. Our Liverpool surgery is geared up to put people at ease and allow them to visit without anxiety. This is a great environment for children to learn that seeing the dentist isn’t a bad thing, and a dental visit can help to prevent more extreme procedures from being required in the future. In some cases, dental sealants can be applied to teeth to help prevent decay. However, correct dental hygiene is still important to protect other areas.
If you don’t take care of your teeth and maintain good oral hygiene, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. This can worsen over time and lead to serious issues such as bacterial infection or infected teeth. The root of the tooth is the part that holds the tooth in place. So, if the tooth root becomes infected, it’s vital that you receive dental treatment as soon as possible to prevent root canal infections or the need for emergency treatment such as tooth extraction dental procedures.
Active infections are very painful and can result in swelling around the natural tooth and jaw as your body reacts to the deep infection. The tooth won’t be able to heal itself so, in this case, you’ll need to look into advanced root canal procedures with a qualified dentist to ensure the tooth is treated and your smile isn't permanently damaged. Here at Dental Excellence, we have a team of conscientious dentists that are able to provide you with a root treatment that’s right for you.
There are a range of issues that can lead to root canal infections, but one of the most common causes is if tooth decay has been left untreated. This can lead to large parts of the tooth becoming damaged, leaving the pulp cavity and pulp chamber as well as the root canal open to infection. You can prevent infected pulp and possible future infection by brushing your teeth regularly and flossing daily. You can get an ordinary filling or a root filling if the decay has already damaged your tooth, and this will reduce the chance of a bacterial infection.
A cracked tooth or dodgy crown is another factor that could lead to canal treatments being necessary. Depending on the severity of the crack, and the state of the dental pulp itself, a root canal procedure might be necessary to save the tooth. You may also require a dental crown to prevent a crack from occurring again.
Root canal surgery consists of removing the infected material whilst keeping the tooth intact. This is done by drilling a hole into the tooth, creating access to the pulp tissue at the tooth canal, and then removing the pulp that carries the infection, leaving the root canal to repair.
Often the hole that has been created is filled with a temporary filling so that, in a post-surgery appointment, the tooth can be checked to ensure that the tooth is no longer infected. If a permanent filling is applied before the tooth has been assessed, it’s possible that the infection could still be present, which could require another surgery to remove the remaining infected material.
Here at Dental Excellence, we’re always transparent about the costs of our dental treatments to ensure that you’re able to budget effectively and get the treatment you need. An endodontic treatment such as a root canal treatment is likely to cost between £575-£865, depending on the complexity. In terms of a crown, a crown inlay itself will cost £800 per tooth, and if you need to have a tooth extracted, an extra £145+ will be added, again depending on the tooth.
Once we begin planning the cosmetic treatment and have identified the correct procedure for your treatment plan, we’ll be able to provide you with a more accurate idea of the exact costs.
Root canal surgery is the process where the infected material, which is damaging the tooth and causing you pain, is removed without breaking the tooth or filling material. This is achieved by drilling a hole into the tooth, which creates access to the infected pulp tissue. This material is then removed along with the infection, leaving the root canal to repair. Often the hole that has been created is then treated with a temporary filling so that the tooth can be checked during post-surgery check-up appointments. If there are any current fillings that were applied before the surgery, it is possible that the infection could still be present, requiring another endodontic procedure to remove the infected material that remains.
In contrast with the symptoms of having an infected tooth, the root canal treatment itself is painless. Before your surgery, an X-ray will be taken of your tooth to identify where the infection is and how serious it is. A rubber dam will be placed around the tooth to ensure the infection doesn’t spread throughout the mouth. But, do not panic! Before one of our gentle dentists begins the skilled and time-consuming procedure, we’ll discuss your treatment and ensure that you are not allergic to any of the materials we use during the root canal filling and general procedure.
The next step after the surgery itself is aftercare. Although the procedure is painless, it can be quite invasive and intense, so it’s especially important to look after the tooth that’s received the root canal treatment. As mentioned, there may be cases when, if the tooth is too worn or damaged as a result of the infection, a crown surface may need to be fitted onto the tooth to protect it and ensure it retains its structural integrity. Luckily, we offer crowns here at Dental Excellence, meaning you can receive this as part of your treatment plan in our Liverpool facility too.
Once the treatment has been completed, your face will likely still be numb as the anaesthetic takes a couple of hours to wear off. It’s possible that your mouth will experience some pain in the days following the treatment whilst your mouth fully heals. As well as this, it's more important than ever that you maintain good dental hygiene and avoid sugary foods and drinks, which accelerate tooth decay. If proper hygiene isn’t maintained, there’s the possibility of another infection developing in your teeth, leading you back to an infected tooth canal all over again.
As with any surgery, risks could be a factor, which is why it’s so important to seek treatment from qualified dentists with a good reputation. Complications that can occur as a result of the treatment are damage to the canal or the tissue in the surrounding area, infection as a result of the treatment or nerve damage. Our top-quality equipment and sterile facility help reduce the chance of any of these issues occurring, but you do need to be aware of these potential risks before you choose to undergo root canal surgery with us at Dental Excellence.
Initially, once the treatment is complete, your face will still be numb as it can take a few hours for the anaesthetic to wear off. It’s also possible you’ll experience pain in the days following your surgery whilst your mouth heals properly. In addition to this, it’s very important that you keep your mouth clean and maintain good oral hygiene.
You should also be extra cautious when consuming sugary foods and drinks as these can accelerate tooth decay. In extreme cases, this could lead back to another infection developing in your tooth. If you have any questions or issues post-treatment, our friendly team is available to ensure that your recovery is as quick as possible.
As well as this, there’s also the chance that you’ll have to attend post-surgery appointments so that the recovery of your tooth can be checked. This generally includes an assessment of the tooth and X-rays to get a clear picture of the state of the tooth. If any issues have occurred, such as cracks or other types of decay, you may need to have further treatment.
One of our courses of treatment will be offered to you, and you’ll be advised to look after your teeth extra well. This includes regular brushing and using mouthwash and floss to prevent any bacteria from forming around the tooth. As mentioned, cutting down on food and drinks that are high in acid or sugar is another step you can take to protect your tooth from composite fillings or a complex crown.
If you’ve suffered from a crack or severe tooth decay and have had a deep filling in the past, it’s possible that this could become infected if it cracks or becomes loose. Because a previously damaged part of the tooth becomes exposed, bacteria have a chance to hit the root canal area. An injury could also have caused this, especially a sports injury that could loosen a filling or damage the tooth directly. This could lead to nerve tissues becoming damaged, which would result in an infected tooth pulp needing to be extracted.
Similarly, if there’s been an issue with your tooth but you weren’t able to receive the treatment quickly enough, you may need to have your tooth removed. Although we always do our best to preserve your natural tooth, if it does need to be removed we have the facilities available to do so. We can also fit tooth-coloured dental implants to replace the tooth that has been extracted, so you don’t have to suffer from a missing tooth. Dental implants are a great subtle tooth replacement when you’re missing a tooth because they can be replaced with an artificial tooth that won’t cause any pain and will still be effective as a tooth. It’s likely that the tooth is damaged or dead, which leads to the loss of the white colour we associate with healthy teeth, so when it’s replaced with an implant, you can enjoy a healthier-looking smile, too.
From your initial appointment with us, we’ll discuss with you all the benefits of the treatments you’re considering and ensure you know exactly what each treatment entails from start to finish. This part of the process is to help alleviate some of your worries about the procedure because it’s only natural to experience some anxiety before any unknown treatment. The majority of our procedures are painless and are often the same day, meaning you can head to the comfort of your own home straight after your treatment.
This is one of the benefits of coming to our Liverpool facility for your treatment. We have highly trained dentists with the latest in dental technology that can perform same-day smile treatment, preventative care and, if required, intensive dental procedures.
We have also created a space that has a much more positive feeling that allows our patients to feel at ease and in good care. Our luxury facilities offer a range of treatments to clients from all over the UK and beyond. We created this space because we know how daunting a cold and clinical dental practice can be.
The root canal procedure is done in stages that are completed in the safest and most effective ways so that the treatment has the best chances of success. You can read stories of our patients' experiences with Dental Excellence so you can be certain we are giving you the best treatment.
To begin the procedure, we first need to clear the root canal so that we can remove any infected pulp and nerve tissue.
You will be under local anaesthesia when this procedure is carried out so you will feel no pain. A small access hole is made on the crown surface of the tooth so that the dental pulp can be reached.
Once the root canal has been cleaned and the entire nerve removed, the dentist will check the quality of the root canal to see if it can be filled.
Once the dentist is happy with the removal of the pulp from the pulp cavity, they will begin the process of filling the tooth. It may be that some type of medical packing material will be used to help kill any bacteria or infection inside the pulp chamber. This may need to be left for a little while to work before additional treatment is performed.
This could mean that an additional appointment may be needed to give the infection time to clear. However, if there is no residual problem, then the root canal can be performed in one appointment. The dentist will clean and shape the interior of the tooth and the root canal so that it is free of contamination and debris. We use a variety of materials in our dental procedures that are safe and will last a long time. During your consultation, you will be able to ask your dentist about the dental materials we use and how they are composed.
Filling material is then inserted into the root canal to close up any channels completely. This will also add strength to the tooth. When the inflamed tissue is removed from the tooth, it no longer gets stability or nourishment from it. This means that without any special material to fill the gap, the tooth will become brittle and crumble. Once the advanced materials have been injected into the tooth, it will be hardened and then the next stage can be started.
Once the tooth has been filled, the top or dental crown of the tooth will need to be filled as well. If the top of the tooth was severely damaged, then artificial crowns can be fixed to the top of the tooth. A crown portion or an entire crown if needed will be attached to the top of the tooth.
Because not all teeth are the same, we have a number of colour-matched permanent crown fittings that can be used so that the crown doesn’t look out of place. Here, the fitting of the crown is an important step as a dodgy crown will eventually become loose and come out, which is the last thing you want. This will then leave the rest of the tooth vulnerable to infection and breakage.
Once the crown is fitted, the procedure will be complete. You may need some over-the-counter pain medication for a day or two, but this will soon pass. There are also alternative pain relief techniques that you can try, but always seek advice from your dentist first before using them.
