  • Composite Bonding Treatment in Liverpool

Composite bonding may just be the perfect dental solution for you.

When it comes to creating your perfect teeth, there are a range of options to choose from. Whilst braces may be the most common treatment, composite bonding treatments are a quicker and more subtle plan if you want to achieve the same results but in a shorter period of time and without the pain.

There are many reasons why you may want to consider dental bonding because it is such an effective method of achieving that smile that you have always dreamed of.

At Dental Excellence, we offer a consultation prior to any dental treatments for you to discuss any issues or concerns you might have about the composite bonding procedure. This initial consultation will be a single appointment held in our luxury Liverpool facility.

How does composite bonding treatment work?

Composite bonding treatments work by placing a composite bond (a tooth-coloured resin material) on the natural tooth itself. This is then used to reshape and adjust the colour of your natural teeth. It is a cosmetic procedure which means that, in most cases, no additional dental work is required. If you suffer from issues such as major misalignment of your teeth, this is something that will need to be remedied before the procedure. Our team at Dental Excellence will be able to advise you if this is the case and work with you in any treatments you may require before your composite bonding.

Before being placed on the enamel, your dental team will match the bonding resin to the colour of your teeth for a natural look. They then roughen the enamel slightly to enable them to apply a liquid to it so the bonding agent can stick. The expert then places the composite on top of this and moulds the tooth into the desired shape. Once this has been carried out, the tooth is then polished. UV light is then used to harden the bonding, which is then polished and trimmed.

As a procedure, it has proven excellent results in record time as composite bonding can be applied in one day, meaning you can start your day with one smile and end it with a fresher, gleaming smile.

As a treatment option, it is fairly flexible as the composite material is tailored to suit your needs; for instance, you may be having the procedure to repair the shape of your tooth or multiple teeth. In some instances, alternative treatment options such as Invisalign will not cut it. Composite bonding allows for the actual shape of your tooth to be revived, making it the main option for you to get the result you are looking for.

It is a pain-free, minimally invasive procedure and, unlike most dental treatments, does not require any needles or drilling. It is also worth noting that, cost-wise, composite bonding is on the cheaper side of dental treatments. This makes it a popular option for those amongst us who would like to improve our smiles at a more affordable price.

In most cases, composite bonding is used as a form of teeth whitening. The material used is very effective in creating a glorious white smile and is a better option than alternatives such as UV light treatments and at-home kits.

So, What Exactly Is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a process that involves placing bonding material over the top of the natural tooth to give it a cleaner appearance.

The beauty of cosmetic bonding is that the material can be applied without any of the tooth itself having to be removed, making it ideal for customers who want to maintain their natural tooth during the bonding process.

To ensure that the results of the composite bonding are as natural as possible, the bonding material used will be the same shade as your natural tooth so that when the process is complete there won’t be any colour difference. The way we do this is by matching the material to the colour of your tooth using a comprehensive shade card in one of our consultation rooms before the treatment takes place.

We offer a B1 shade guarantee at affordable prices. However, if you want to achieve a different dental shade or are happy with dark amalgam fillings, we can use different materials to achieve the desired effect for you. Our cosmetic dentistry team can go over a shade guide with you and arrange a treatment plan that fits your requirements before you commit to anything.

How long will composite bonding last?

Most composite bonding will generally last between five to six years. However, you will find the longevity of the composite bonding procedure varies as it is largely dependent on external factors. This includes things such as the quality of the work carried out on the tooth (this is why we advise you to do your research and pick a dental expert you can trust who is highly skilled and that you can rely on).

Where the composite bond is placed and depending on where you need the composite bond can also impact how susceptible it is to damage. Your general oral health will also be a determining factor in how long your composite bonding lasts - as you might expect, the health of your natural teeth will make a difference to the longevity of your composite and how long it will last. This means you cannot neglect your oral hygiene following the procedure. This includes keeping an eye on the sugary food and drinks you drink and being aware of habits such as grinding your teeth regularly - this will make a massive difference in how long your composite bonding will last.

While it can take longer than regular teeth, your composite bonding can stain over time. To prevent this from happening, you need to make sure the procedure has been carried out correctly, avoid food and drinks known to stain your teeth such as tea, coffee, and alcoholic drinks like red wine, and make sure you continue to regularly brush and floss your teeth and see a hygienist to make sure your teeth remain as clean as can be.

While we cannot confirm how long your composite bonding will last, at Dental excellence, we can guarantee your composite bonding will last 12 months. Should any issues arise following this, please get in touch and we can book you in for a follow-up appointment if required. Just call us on 0151 729 0000.

What problems can this dental treatment fix?

Composite bonding can fix a range of problems. This includes fixing the appearance of slightly crooked teeth. This is done by using some of the bonding material to hide any minor misalignment.  Composite bonding is also used if you suffer from gaps in your teeth. The way this procedure works is by placing the material on the teeth so the gap is less noticeable or in some cases closed completely.

A dental issue that cannot be fixed by undergoing composite bonding is bruxism, also known as teeth grinding. The reason is, the bonding used in the procedure would not be able to withstand the grinding and can end up damaged, resulting in a fracture.

It is also worth noting that you cannot have composite bonding placed on top of your crown. This is because the material used will not stick to the crown as it only covers the surface and not the tooth itself. In this instance, our experts at Dental Excellence would be able to advise you on how to move forward to achieve your goals.

If you have crooked teeth, you generally have two options. Option one: apply braces and go through that process, which can take several months just to get an appointment, plus a good couple of years with the braces on before you achieve the results you are searching for. Option two: go down the cosmetic route where you can get a more instant but just as accurate result.

It is not often that you will find someone with perfect teeth - even the smallest issues, such as rough and uneven edges of your teeth, can be fixed using the composite material, so it is worth booking a free consultation if this is something you are interested in.

Please bear in mind that composite bonding only fixes these issues if they remain relatively small. Should you suffer from a large gap in your teeth or a major issue as a result of your crooked teeth, this may need to be looked at by a dental expert at a separate appointment prior to your composite bonding procedure. If you have any questions about this, please contact our team at 0151 729 0000 who will be able to advise you further.

What are the risks?

There is very little risk to the composite bonding procedure. At Dental Excellence, in particular, the knowledge our team has means we can assure you the procedure is as safe as possible. You are also provided with adequate post-care support once the procedure is complete. However, there are always small risks to consider. There is a chance of infection, restaining of the teeth, and bad oral hygiene- all of which can be taken care of with regular visits to your hygenist.

Is Composite Bonding Painful?

Before looking into composite bonding in Liverpool too much, you might be wondering if bonding is suitable for you and how painful it is, if at all. Here, we will talk you through the composite bonding process and debunk any myths you might have heard or any preconceptions you may have about the cosmetic dentistry treatments that we offer.

Before Your Composite Bonding Treatment

Before the treatment begins, you will have an initial consultation appointment to discuss what you can expect from the treatment and what the process of the treatment will be. At this stage, we hope to alleviate any fears or apprehensions you might have so that you can enjoy a comfortable treatment process and go home happy with the results.

Once you have had this first appointment and have agreed on an affordable plan with one of our consultants, you will be able to begin your treatment at your next appointment. At no stage will you be left in the dark during the process. We always ensure that you know how to look after your teeth and how to keep your treatment in the best state possible to prevent it from being a waste of your time and money.

During Your Composite Bonding Treatment

We do not use any general anaesthetic or numbing solutions at our practice because the entire process is painless. There are also no alterations made to the natural tooth at any stage with composite bonding. This means that you can totally relax during the treatment and look forward to leaving on the same day with your new, more aesthetic smile.

You are in control of the methods and materials we use during composite bonding, so it is entirely up to you whether you want to achieve a brighter shade, have a composite filling with white filling material as an alternative to silver fillings, or if you just want amalgam fillings to fix any imperfections you have.

If you are looking to correct misaligned or crooked teeth, your options are either braces or cosmetic dentistry services such as clear aligners. Whichever route you choose to go down, neither will be entirely pain-free or will show results as quickly as with composite bonding. Both options also come with restrictions, especially when opting for braces.

After Your Composite Bonding Treatment

For braces, you will need regular dental appointments to adjust your wiring, and you will have to be ultra-careful about substances that stain, such as wine and coffee, as well as certain crunchy foods that are more likely to dislodge your wiring or get stuck in your teeth. Just like with your natural teeth, the composite material can become stained, but there are a lot fewer restrictions with cosmetic dentistry procedures like composite bonding than there are with alternate cosmetic dentistry treatment options like those mentioned above.

If you are interested in starting the process, book a consultation with us today and we will get you on your way to having those perfect teeth.

Aftercare – Will You Be Able to Eat Straight Away?

It is vital that you follow the guidelines that you receive in the bespoke plan that will have been set out for you in your initial dentist appointment. If you do not follow the cosmetic care plans that are created for you, you risk reversing the effects of your treatment with the filling material wasting away and leaving a discoloured filling or your teeth becoming damaged beyond repair.

The first 48 hours after your treatment are particularly important when it comes to maintaining your new teeth. Anything that could conceivably stain your natural teeth also has the ability to stain your white fillings, so be more aware than ever about what you’re consuming during this time. For example, avoid settling down with a cup of coffee or any sugary, chewy food if your goal is to preserve the dentistry work that you have paid for.

With a quick appointment with your dentist and the help of a special cosmetic dentistry technique, you will be able to see any wear and tear that might have occurred to your teeth, as well as check the state of your general dental hygiene. Remember that the better your overall dental hygiene is, the better the composite bonding treatment will reach its maximum potential, lasting for a minimum of five years.

You will be able to eat after your dental treatment, but it is best to stick to soft food and water for a minimum of two days afterwards to prevent any chips or staining from occurring. While the material used for composite bonding comes at an amazing price and is one of the best that modern digital dentistry can offer, the material will never be quite as strong as your natural tooth is, meaning that excessive pressure or force on your new teeth could cause them to chip and become damaged.

The type of material used can also have an impact on how quickly the tooth discolours or deteriorates. When using the composite bonding material, it is applied in very small amounts to fill in gaps between the teeth or any chips or to cover the entire tooth. When using porcelain material, it is not possible to apply it in small amounts and it can only be applied all over as a veneer. The way in which they are fitted is different, too. With the porcelain veneer, one layer of enamel from the natural tooth has to be filed down, which permanently damages your teeth – they do last approximately three times longer than composite veneers though, and the price reflects this.

On the plus side, the porcelain material does not get stained so if you are a big coffee or wine drinker and are worried about having to cut down on your favourite beverage, porcelain veneers might be the ones for you. You still have to take care of your teeth, of course, but you can afford to be a little less careful if you opt for porcelain material instead of going for the composite veneer treatment.

Can I Whiten My Teeth If I Have Composite Bonding?

The material used for composite bonding is composite resin and it does not behave in the same way as your tooth enamel does. In short, you cannot whiten a bonded tooth.

Bonding can appear stained in the same way that your regular teeth can but using tooth whitening products will not remove the stains, unfortunately. However, there are ways that you can achieve a whiter appearance to your teeth even if they already have composite bonding or veneers applied to them.

In general, a composite bonding treatment typically lasts between five and seven years, making it a great option if you’re insecure about your teeth. Porcelain veneers in contrast last around fifteen years, making them much more of a commitment and more of an investment.

Once the composite bonding process has begun, you will be able to make touch-up appointments, which will help to restore the composite treatment, making it as white and healthy as when the treatment was first administered. Any damage or discolouration is hidden beneath the composite material, completely transforming your smile into something you can feel proud of. So, although you cannot whiten your natural teeth once you have had a composite bonding treatment, you can get them touched up whenever you like to whiten the material covering your teeth instead.

The best time to whiten your natural teeth if you are going to do so is before you have a bonding procedure because your teeth will be at their whitest when your dentist colour matches the bonding resin to your teeth. Pair this with good oral hygiene and touch-up treatments, your natural teeth should continue to match your bonded teeth.

So, even though bonding materials don’t react in the same way to whitening products as your teeth do, you can make sure that the composite material matches the shade of your teeth by getting touch-ups within a week or two of whitening your natural teeth.
